BTW, you're right in staing that according to our Nepali mentality, wisdom comes with age...Most of us were raised not to question authority in school/home/of elders and this has been the root for all the superstitious beliefs thats still so damn prevalent even though the younger genration may be well educated. For a better Nepal, we definitely need new/young/vibrant leaders and the old netas have to get da fug out. They lack charisma/vigor and energy which our politics so badly needs. Getting back to the point, weren't the planes missing parts earlier as I read/heard somewhere that most of the internal parts were all sold by the ones in charge. They had to get generic parts or something likw that...Can anyone corroborate? If this is the case, damn, NEVER ever fly via Nepal Airlines and make sure your loved ones don't either. Its a catastrophe thats about to unwind. Once it unfolds, I'd love to see the netas lynched for this (ala China's recent execution of their equivalent of the US' FDA Director).

This can't compare to the Dashian sacrifice as this sacrifice was amde for the plane's mechanical condition to automatically improve. We've made a mockery ourselves internationally with the tradition of animal sacrifices for even the smallest things. A plane sits collecting dust and after extensive repairs (at the cheapest generic materials available), it is deemed ready to fly after a goat is sacrificed. If this is how safety can be comromised, I have nothing more to say.

The sacrifice followed technical problems to one of the Boeing 757 aircraft in the fleet, and took place on the runway in front of the affected aircraft. The 757 later flew from Kathmandu to Hong Kong without problems.

the news is not all that ridiculous as it sounds when you read the title.
we all know, sacrificing animals is a part of our culture. this is just one instance. just because BBC published the news, let's not be naive about our culture. blame the culture if you want to, the news doesn't surprise me.

it seems like they fixed the problem in the aircraft first (i don't know for sure, from the news, how reliable and precise was the fix though) and then only went for sacrificing, not that they sacrificed hoping the aircraft to get fixed by itself or from some divine power. as someone said above, sacrificing roosters/goats and the likes during dashain has been quite commonplace. why so big fuss about it now?...may be we (nepal) are under the attention of vigilant international communities for quite sometime now due to political reasons, they have put us as a specimen under microscopic vision and henceforth blew this news out of proportion. 5 years back, they wouldn't have even cared about what's going on in the land of himalaya.

It's not the culture that's being questioned, it's the implication or how practical is it to exercise those beliefs in these modern days, Oh lets say to fix something like a plane (Hawai Jahaaj). What we call is a ritual, appears to the international community as goats being used to fix the plane, magical power, that sort of stuff.But you're true, we're getting more news now. Let's not defend our culture with this kind of stupidity. No matter how you feel or what you have to say, this will make us look as bad as the Bush Man of Africa, maybe even worse.

i am not defending our culture, i am just questioning the note of disbelief in our parts for this particular incident. we know where we came from, don't we? if they had sacrificed and did nothing practically/technically to fix the plane, i would have understood but it's not like that. tens and hundreds of goats are sacrificed in manakamana/dakhshinkali and other devi temples every day...were u ever surprised?
